「金曜日から長い週末だったことは間違いない。特に金曜日は難しい一日だった。セバスチャン（オジエ）がペナルティを受けたことで、大きなギャップができた。あのようなコンディションでは、少し油断してミスをすることもある。それに加えて天候とコンディションが、ペース管理を難しくした。道幅が狭くて滑りやすいので、ミスしてパンクしたり接触したりしやすいんだ」

It has definitely been a long weekend after Friday. Friday was a difficult day. We came out of it with quite a gap and then Sebastien had to take some penalty which made a huge gap. In those conditions you can get a little complacent and make a mistake. The weather and conditions on top of that made it hard to manage it. The roads are so narrow and slippery. So easy to make a mistake and a puncture, clip something. 

「もちろん満足しているよ。あのようなコンディションでは、自分の直感を働かせるだけ。相手より速いか遅いかなんてわからない。僕たちは水たまりや滑りやすいところを通り抜けなければならなかった。このような極限のコンディションにいるときは、いつも前や後ろのドライバーが自分よりもずっとグリップがあるように感じるものだ」

Obviously I’m pleased. You just try to use your instinct. You don’t know if your faster or slower than your opponents. You have to make your way through the water and the slippery bits. Whenever you are in such extreme conditions you always feels like the guy in front or behind is able to find a lot more grip than you can.

「非常に難しかった。特にステージ上の水の量。クルマに2人のクルーがいるのに、誰も運転していないような感覚が頻繁にあった。それは少し不安だった。とはいえ、そんなことを考える時間は1秒もない。ただノートを読み続け、コースに留まることを願うだけだ。エルフィン（エバンス）が言ったように、ステージが終わったとき、誰かがもっと良い走りをしたかどうかはわからない。良いイベントだったけど、本当に難しかった。金曜日の夜からポジションをキープし、ミスをしないようにしなければならなかった。トヨタ勢が3台も表彰台に上ったことは嬉しい。また日本に来ることができて本当にうれしい。土曜と日曜は、結果を出すためにプレッシャーを感じていた。このような形で1年を締めくくることができて、本当にうれしい。特にここで、チームメイトのみんなや豊田会長と一緒にいられるのは最高だ。これ以上嬉しいことはない」
It was extremely difficult. The amount of water that was on the stages. Every so often it felt like there was two passengers in the car and no one driving. Which is a bit unnerving. But at the same time you don’t have second to think about it. Just keep reading the notes and hope you stay on track. Then, like Elvyn said, when you get to the end of the stages, you don’t know if someone has managed to do a better job or not. It has been a good event, but really challenging. From Friday night we just had to try and hold position and not make any mistakes and that is obviously really tricky when we’ve had the conditions that we’ve had. It’s amazing to have three Toyotas on the podium. It’s just brilliant here in Japan. I must admit could feel a bit of pressure Saturday and Sunday hoping we could bring the result home. So I’m really chuffed to finish the year off like this, especially here with all of our team mates and president. It couldn’t be better.

「期待以上だ。素晴らしいチームだ。問題は、前回来たときはシャンパンで酔いそうになったが、今回は日本酒で酔いそうになっていることだ。この素晴らしいチームには本当に感謝している。みんな勝てるし、負けず嫌いだ。フェアな競争で、本当に笑顔になれたし、元気をもらった」

More than I expected. This is a great team. The problem is, the last time I was here I was almost drunk with champagne, this time I’m almost drunk with sake. 

I really appreciate this great team. Everybody can win and they hate to lose. It was a fair competition that really brought a smile to my face and energized me.

「この週末はずっと驚きの連続だった。多くのドライバーがミスをしてタイムをロスしたし、僕たちも残念ながら序盤はそうだった。でもすぐに、チームのために1-2-3フィニッシュを狙える位置にいることに気づいた。僕のモチベーションは、マシンを無事にゴールさせ、豊田会長に喜んでもらうことに集中することだった。チーム全員が本当に喜んでいる。今夜は祝杯をあげるつもりだ」

I think we have been surprised this whole weekend. We expected a difficult start from Friday and it definitely matched our expectations, it was very tough and a lot of drivers made mistakes and lost time, us as well, unfortunately very early on. But then quickly realised we were in a position to deliver a 1-2-3 for the team and the gaps were big. It was clear that my motivation was to focus on bringing the car home and make our president happy. The whole team is really happy. I know how hard it is to win at home. Tonight we are going to have a drink or two to celebrate. 

「確かにリズムを管理するのは難しい。とくに滑りやすくトリッキーなコンディションではなおさらだ。プッシュしすぎることなく、リズムをキープした。タイヤ選択は常に難しく、2ステージ続けて同じコンディションになることはなかった。タフなラリーだったので、この順位に立てたことをみんな喜んでいる」
Definitely difficult to manage a rhythm. Especially in these conditions when it’s so slippery and tricky. We kept a decent rhythm without pushing too much. It was never clear with the tyre choice and never two stages in a row with the same conditions. It has been a tough rally so we are all pleased to be here in this position.

「このような形で1年を締めくくることができるのは、確かに特別なことだ。表彰台に上った3台のマシンを大スクリーンで見ることができ、その前にチーム全員がいるのは素晴らしいことだ。このような難しいラリーでこのような結果を残せたことは本当に素晴らしいことだと思う」
For sure it is something special to end the year like this. It’s amazing to see all three the cars on the podium on the big screen and all the team in front of it. I think it was something special from a difficult rally like this. 

「もちろん、1位でフィニッシュしたかったが、難しい1週間で、思うようなペースではなかった。金曜日のコンディションを見て、とにかく安定した走りをキープして、チーム全体のために表彰台を目指したいと思った」
Of course I would rather be in the first position. It was a difficult week. I wasn’t on the pace were I wanted to be. After seeing the conditions on Friday it was clear that we just needed to keep it steady and achieve a podium for the whole team.
